Concept - Test - Realization
The cooperation between Bauhaus University of Weimar (BUW), Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) and University of Juba (UJ) aims at strengthening the praxis orientation (1:10 and 1:1 scale prototyping) and interdisciplinary composition of architecture education in Africa, as well as involving the private sector (new business models). By doing so, research and teaching portfolios, which reflect African reality, will be also strengthened in Germany. The project in particular offers a unique framework to strengthen already established competencies (praxis orientation and interdisciplinary) of the Bauhaus University (BUW) as well as to build new capacities with regard to architecture in Africa and to integrate before mentioned Bauhaus qualities in African architecture education, and to create a functioning dissemination and up-scaling model.

YEAR I: Building in EiABC, Addis Ababa - Focus: Building Materials
The first, material-oriented project phase saw the joint construction of a two-story straw-board building at the EiABC campus in Addis Ababa. The building was collaboratively designed and assembled by experts and students from EiABC, Bauhaus University and ETH-Zürich.

YEAR II: Building in Ethiopia Focus: Building Process
The second CTR project phase (year 2) will see the construction of a "SICU": Sustainable Incremental Construction Unit, a process oriented building prototype which also deals with participatory design to be done in a highly dense neighborhood of Addis Ababa. It will be a show case where the team of students with their tutors will research and explore possibilities of designing and realizing an incremental housing unit in an urban context.

Year 3: Building in South Sudan - Focus: Building System
MACU : Mobile Automated Contemporary Unit
MACU Mobile Automated Contemporary Unit is the third experimental, technology oriented building prototype which deals with integrating new digital planning and manufacturing techniques into participatory design for the case of highly dense neighborhood of Addis Ababa and emerging country like South Sudan. The aim is to develop such a small scale parameterized modular housing strategy which flexible enough to suits the local needs both - Ethiopian and South Sudanese project partners. It will be a show case where the team of students with their tutors will research and explore possibilities of designing and realizing an flexible housing unit as a 1:1 prototype.
